TALK BY PROFESSOR BORLAUG AT ESALQ IN 2004
IN February 2004, during a trip around Brazil visiting PR, MS, MT, DF and SP, Prof. Dr. Norman Borlaug gave a speech to the teaching body at ESALQ, as well as colleagues and friends, entitled “From the Green Revolution to the Gene Revolution – Our Challenge in the 21st Century”;

Speaking to the audience filling the main ESALQ auditorium, in Spanish, Dr. Borlaug recounted the background to his work in India and Pakistan, introducing varieties of Mexican wheat and teaching fertilizer usage, leading these countries to food self-sufficiency after a period of scarcity and famine, which was called the Green Revolution by an FAO director.

After referring to the notable work done in Brazil to transform unpromising ground in the Cerrado region into highly fertile farming soil and analyzing the food problem in Africa, Dr. Borlaug touched on the biotechnology evolution and his dream of transplanting rust-resistant rice genes into wheat, soybeans and other crops that suffer from the disease.

The recording of the talk and the slides shown in English have been translated and edited by agronomist Fernando Cardoso, and can now be read in full in Portuguese.
